Amen for making points #4 and #5. Admittedly, the latter is reasonably obvious and has been done by package travellers since the '70's (the wonders of continental breakfasts with bread and cheese). However, I'm really pleased to see an expert has backed-up my ley-man's attitude to financing 8 weeks away. The number of people who looked at you like they were amazed you had been let out the country as you withdrew $100 on a Mastercard, yet slept (literally) on a wodge of traveller's cheques carrying a range of pitfalls and poor rates (although a small amount does offer a little security). Anyway, I looked in to this when I returned (as by this point I was starting to get really worried), but it turned out I had done more-or-less the right thing. Result.

Sadly, #1 was harder to stick to; something to bare in mind for next time!

@Rick Thanks for the comment: I can't take credit as it's a guest post but there's certainly some great points -no matter how obvious it's always helpful to be reminded.

@Moon -Love your blog -I've just had a look through and will definitely be subscribing. Coming back from my holiday it's definitely easier to read these tips than to live them but I did my best...just a couple of rocks thankfully.

@Stephen. Thanks for stopping by -I agree that forgetting an important thing can be costly -thankfully I remembered everything I needed for my most recent trip.

Great post! Those tips are worth mentioning again. Reading this post will surely lessen the overspending when travelling. Being organized before the trip will really save a lot because you are in control of the things you're buying. Unlike when you forgot an important thing for the trip, when you buy those in another place, there maybe a huge difference in prices.

#1 and #3--super important. I'm guilty of not caring about my budget while vacationing, it's easy to get carried away. But it hits you like a ton of bricks (ok, maybe a couple of rocks).

Good tips!

Adam,

Great post, most of this would be common sense. However, there are some little things like the credit card that can save you a fortune in currency conversion dollars.
