Admittedly, the latter is reasonably obvious and has been done by package travellers since the '70's (the wonders of continental breakfasts with bread and cheese). However, I'm really pleased to see an expert has backed-up my ley-man's attitude to financing 8 weeks away. The number of people who looked at you like they were amazed you had been let out the country as you withdrew $100 on a Mastercard, yet slept (literally) on a wodge of traveller's cheques carrying a range of pitfalls and poor rates (although a small amount does offer a little security). Anyway, I looked in to this when I returned (as by this point I was starting to get really worried), but it turned out I had done more-or-less the right thing. Result. Sadly, #1 was harder to stick to; something to bare in mind for next time! Amen for making points #4 and #5. Being organized before the trip will really save a lot because you are in control of the things you're buying.
